Year 4

Summer 2 newsletter

Last week Key stage 2 children were lucky enough to have a visit from 'Breakout Maths'. We had to solve maths puzzles and problems to unlock padlocks connected to doors, draws and filing cabinets. Some of the clues were really tricky, however all children showed the characteristics of : resilience, persistence and teamwork. It was great to see some future leaders take control. The gentlemen commented on how amazing the pupils at Whitegate End were. Below are some photos of us trying to escape !

We had a fantastic day developing our teamwork skills at Castleshaw yesterday. The weather was amazing if not a little bit hot, have a look below at some of our fantastic pictures :)

This morning as part of our maths work we went on a 'Measure hunt'!

Summer term 1 newsletter

For our wow starter we had an amazing morning  exploring the culture of Asia. We cooked some amazing dishes,  learned how to use chopsticks and discovered how to write our names in Mandarin.

Our fantastic Day at MOSI !

Some children in year 4 had an amazing morning learning how to cycle safely. They also learnt a few tricks including cycling with only one arm on the handle bars.

Welcome back and happy new year ! What a day we have had today ! As part of our Wow starter for our new topic 'We built this City' children designed and then made using lots of different resources their own settlements. Below are some pictures of the children hard  at work. Finished photos will be added once the paint has dried.

Maths at the Movies

This week we have had our 'Maths at the Movies' week. We have taken part in a lot of maths related activities all centered around the film 'Madagascar'.  We had a great time! Above are some pictures of us weighing and measuring ingredients to make 'Madagascan Fruit Cocktails'.

Welcome back. We hope that you have had an amazing summer break and we are looking forward to working with you this year.

Supporting your child with their learning will be Mr Scott, Mr Butterworth, Mrs Howsham and Mrs Murphy. Feel free to chat to us on the playground each morning from 8.30am or alternatively we will be holding a drop in session from 3pm until 3.30pm each Monday to discuss your child's learning.

'Romeing around'
Our first topic this half term is the Romans. We have lots of exciting learning experiences planned that will enable the children to learn, have fun and develop a fantastic lifelong attitude to learning.

For our ‘Wow’ starter we will be  carrying out a special mission set by a London Museum involving digging for Roman artefacts.

In Literacy we will be turning into journalists and reporting on the Roman Invasion of Britain. We will also be writing a story set in
Roman Britain.

In Maths we will be developing our abilities when working with numbers in a range of contexts and building on our knowledge of roman numerals.

In History we will be learning all about  the Roman invasion of Britain and finding out about how historians gather information about the past.

In Geography we will be looking at the whole of the Roman Empire and developing our map skills and Geographical knowledge of the world.

In Science we will be looking at animals including humans starting off with looking at teeth.

In Art and D&T we will be looking at roman jewellery and creating and designing our own roman fort made from a variety of materials.

We are  also lucky enough  to have an expert coming into school complete with full Roman outfits for us to try on later in the term

Below are some key reminders that will help you this year:

PE - PE will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday

Homework will be given out on a Thursday and is due back in the following Wednesday.

Our spelling test will be on a Friday.

As being a confident reader has such a positive impact on many areas of learning please read with your child every night. It doesn't have to be a lot just a small amount and then a good discussion about what they have read and understood is so valuable. Children need to have their reading books in school each day.

What have we been up to?

We had a fun afternoon on Monday digging to find hidden Roman artefacts. We uncovered lots of strange objects and had a discussion about what they might have been used for. Have a look in our gallery bellow for some photographs of us in action.

Roman Day!

WOW! What a morning. We had a visit from a man teaching us about life during the occupation of the Romans. We got the chance to try on some Roman Armour (it was very heavy). We looked at REAL Roman artefacts and we even had a go at throwing spears at roman targets. Check below for some photographs of us in action.
