Phonics and Reading

The children in Year one and two are taught in three different phonics groups with either Miss Earle, Miss Beattie or Mrs Ashton.  Phonics is taught in different phases from 1-6, most children in Year 1 are working at phase 3 and we aim for them to be working within phase 5 by the end of the year.

Each day we have a daily phonics session where first we practise all the phonemes (letter sounds) and high frequency words we have learned so far. Next we learn a new phoneme and practise reading and writing the grapheme (written letter sounds) in words. Then we practise writing sentences using our new phoneme. If we are lucky we might get time for a game or two!

Each week a set of spellings is sent home to learn ready for Friday when we have a spelling test.
