Spring

During Spring 1,  Year 4, we focus and understand the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for England, up to the time of Edward the Confessor. We consider the trends and contrast them with the Roman invasion of Britain around 500 years earlier, which they learnt about in Year 3. We look at a range of sources and question their accuracy by comparing them to modern sources of information.

In Spring 2, we will also learn about the Stone Age and make comparisons between living now and then. They will make some links between and across periods, such as the differences between clothes, food, and buildings and identify where some periods fit into a chronological framework by noting connections, notable individuals, trends and contrasts over time.

In our reading and writing we will focus on How to Train a Dragon by Cressida Cowell. This will involve writing a diary entry for characters in the story, a setting description and a report on the Viking invasion of Britain. Alongside this, we will be reading the book in our whole class reading sessions to improve the fluency of our reading to answer a range of questions.

In our Maths work, we will continue to develop our knowledge by focussing further on multiplication and division before moving onto the perimeter of shapes. Following this, we will learn about fractions including ordering them, comparing fractions with different denominators and finding equivalent fractions before moving onto decimals.

Our science work will focus on electricity in Spring 1 and then animals and habitats in Spring 2.

We are asking for your support to talk to your child about their learning so please take the time to have a look at the documents below which give you an overview of our learning for the term.
