  • Rudi - Our School Dog

Rudi, our friendly Hungarian Vizsla, has been part of Whitegate End for a couple of years now. He started by spending time in the Headteacher’s office and is gradually being introduced to more areas and situations with the children, such as the library and The Bubble. Rudi plays an important role in supporting wellbeing and creating a calm, positive environment for learning.

    Why Have a School Dog?

Research and our own experience show that having a school dog brings many benefits, including:

    • A calming effect on pupils
    • Encouraging expression and participation
    • Fostering a sense of responsibility
    • Increasing enthusiasm for and enjoyment of animals
    • Teaching children to nurture and respect life
    • Helping children build confidence in reading
    • Improving attendance

    Rudi’s Welfare and Training

Rudi lives with Mr Hollingsworth and his family. He has completed approved training and undergoes regular temperament checks. His welfare is always our priority – he has his own quiet space in the Headteacher’s office and enjoys regular walks and breaks. If at any point Rudi does not enjoy school life, we will ensure his wellbeing by making appropriate changes.

    Safety and Risk Assessment

A full risk assessment is in place and reviewed regularly. While Rudi is in school, he is always supervised and kept on a short lead when moving around. Hygiene and safety measures are strictly followed, including designated toileting areas and cleaning protocols.

    Allergies and Fears

We understand that not all children are comfortable around dogs. If your child has allergies or you prefer they do not interact with Rudi, please contact the school office. We will work with families to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable.
