Cross Curricular Topics & Knowledge Organisers

At Whitegate End Primary we use cross curricular topics to deliver or foundation subjects (Geography, History, Design and Technology and Art etc) .

Each topic has a Science, History or Geography driver.                                                                                                     The other foundation subjects enhance the cross curricular topics that are taught. During the year the topic titles are shared with the children and we carry out pupil voice activities to take on board the ideas and interests of our children.

Each year group has specific objectives which will be taught throughout the course of the year. Each class teacher ensures their objectives are taught which in turn ensures we cover all of the National Curriculum objectives by the end of Key Stage Two. We have worked as a staff team to develop this curriculum to ensure we deliver a progressive and engaging curriculum.

The class teachers ensure each objective is covered by creating 'Curriculum Coverage' documents. These detail each objective for the year group and within each topic they will be taught.

We then think about the creative and engaging ways in which these objectives can be taught. Again, we feel the interests of our children are very important and their ideas are added in to planning wherever possible.

Each class teacher creates their Curriculum Overview which details the title of each topic and the subjects which will be taught each half term. These are used as working documents and may be changed across the course of the year to respond to World events or items in the news.

We use Knowledge Organisers (KOs) in class and sometimes as part of our Nando's homework to help children to learn the essential knowledge they need for each topic they study. A Knowledge Organiser sets out in detail what we want children to know by heart by the end of the topic. Each KO contains a Key Vocabulary which is a collection of key terms that children will learn.  We expect the majority of children to be able to recall all of the information on the KO by the end of the topic. It is also useful for children to go back to previous KOs and revise these so that the information from previous topics is not forgotten.

In 2019-20 academic year we have further improved our Knowledge organisers to include the sticky learning pupils are expected to retain and recall along with additional useful information linked to the subject.
