Whitegate End has held its first Carol Service at St Georges Church. We are grateful to Rev. Leaf and other members of the church congregation who have planned and prepared for our visit. All the children and staff had a fantastic time.
Some photographic highlights are shown below.
As the children make their way from school to St George's church they are accompanied across the road by members of staff. Children from year 1-6 attended the carol service, whilst our EYFS children continue with the preparations for their Christmas performance.
When all the children were seated, our service began. Rev. Leaf welcomed us and led us through the candles on the advent wreath. Children assisted him in lighting these which remind Christians of the preparations made for Jesus' birth. The candles represent the patriarchs, prophets, John the Baptist, Mary and Jesus.
Children sung a number of Christmas carols and staff read Bible passages that tell the story of Christmas. The choir also performed for the school, even singing the traditional Christmas song, Gaudete, in Latin. Rev. Leaf spoke to us about the true meaning of Christmas. We watched a clip from the film 'Jungle all the way' where the main character is so wrapped up in getting his son the latest Christmas must have, that the true meaning of Christmas has been lost. Rev. Leaf told us about Jesus giving us the free gift of love at Christmas time.
At the end of the service Miss Ashton thanked Rev. Leaf for his hospitality, to the choir for their singing and to Mrs Maslen for preparing the service. After this we all returned to school.
We hope to make the carol service an annual event for the children and to continue to build our links with St George's Church.
